CATARACTS
- Clouding of the lens within the eye which usually develops later in life.
- Can also be present at birth (congenital) or develop in young people, if inheritable.
- The lens is located behind the pupil and is crystal clear at birth.
- As a cataract develops the lens becomes opaque, which causes blurry vision, glare, and light sensitivity.
- An eye doctor can detect cataract during a complete eye exam when the eyes are dilated.
- The back of the eye (retina) is also viewed in order to determine if there are any other disorders contributing to blurred
vision, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.
- Cataract surgery is very successful at restoring normal vision.
- Outpatient (day) surgery
- Local anesthesia
- Small incision no-stitch surgery is state-of-the-art and is performed by our surgeons
- Cataractous lens is replaced with a prosthetic intraocular lens at surgery
- Surgery is indicated when the cataracts cause enough loss of sight so that a person’s work, hobbies, or lifestyle
is compromised.
